Steve Warren earned a BA in Economics and Psychology at UCC, before receiving his MSc in Psychological Studies in the University of Glasgow. Steve is interested in online worlds, and how we interact and live with, in, and through these virtual environments.
His PhD is investigating why people invest so much time into these online worlds. Meaning in life was found to be a major reason, with individuals using online games as a temporary vehicles to obtain missing meaning in life. Online games facilitate this through social activity, a sense of community, expression, agency, achievement, order, personal growth, and the fact that they are an idealised world.
His research now centres on understanding whether the character you play is you, or a separate ‘other’ that you control.
His PhD is being supervised by Dr. Jurek Kirakowski, with Professor John McCarthy as his second supervisor.
